Dug this out of my archives, and thought it would help keep the Joni thing going here on DIME. This soundboard show features Joni alone (until the final track) in NYC at the Carnegie. This performance is nearly exactly midway between "Blue" (June '71) and "For The Roses" (November'72), and features Joni playing mostly songs from those two LPs, plus a few of the obligatory back catalog stuff (BYT, BSN). The "For The Roses" stuff is really cool to hear, in raw, solo versions nine months before their album release. Joni is her typical, effervescent early 70s self, with quite a bit of fun audience interaction. She's clearly happy to be there. Joined by part or all of CSN&Y on the final track. Sound quality is generally excellent, but has two notable flaws: 1) a bit of oversaturation on Joni's voice (especially notable during a few of the trademark prolonged Joni high-notes), and 2) some dropout in one channel or the other on a few tracks, especially the last. Both of these are is infrequent enough, and not very severe, so that they do not detract from the enjoyment of the show, to these ears. Originally seeded on the trader's den last year, this is a re-seed, with no changes made by me--could have made it mono and minimized the dropouts, but that would have been stupid, as the separation is very good and part of what makes this one so enjoyable. Copied below are the original seeder's copious "clean-up" notes. Thanks to raindawg for an excellent, well-documented "re-mastering" of this poorly-circulated gem. This is a good one, and fits on one CD-R. No artwork (yet). The Circle Game Original Seeder's Notes: Remastered, reviewed, and seeded to www.thetradersden.org on 2004-11-24/25 by The RainDawg (www.audiophilia.net) Remastering Notes: I downloaded this set from bt.easytree.org on Nov. 12 of 2004. The sound is great, but it was seeded with some nasty silences in the audience noise at the tracks transition points. This, and a few other small issues were fixed with Adobe Audition 1.5, in the following order: -Removed small gaps of silences between each track and smoothed so that the audience noise is continuous. -Track 16 contains just audience noise, but at it's conclusion was a very harsh cut-off that lead into a quieter audience preparing for the first encore. I removed the gap and smoothed these two sections together and they now flow perfectly. -The set was retracked as the transtions were previously in the middle of the audience noise. I moved them to be closer to the start of each song. Also, track 18 was split into two, as the introduction where Joni is bringing her "friends" on stage was rather long. -DC Bias point adjusted; the waveform is now cenetered about 0dB -From Track 13 onward, the recording was slightly right-leaning. I boosted just the left channel of this segment 2.5 dB, and it balances nicely now. -Genlte fade-in on track 1 to remove the audience noise harsh start. -End of show had a 2 second fadeout applied to the audience noise. Remaining audio issues (unfixed): -The audience noise at the end of track 10 cuts out abruptly before returning in time for the beginning of track 11. This is from the analog source. -Track 12 cuts out for a tape flip in the midle of the song. The audio returns a bit later, cutting into Joni's into to track 13 There is an outstandingly low hiss floor, and this tape must come from some fairly high grade analog recorders. There is some distortion during certain louder parts, and so the sound can't be ranked a solid A, but is an easy A- with the clarity being what it is elsewhere on the tape. Excellent sound indeed. The set does not have a pedigree lineage, but it is digitally clean and lossless, so has not deteriorted during its digital lifetime. It should be noted that no EQ, hiss reduction, or other audio quality editing was employed. Performance Notes: The performance is great, featuring a (mostly) solo Joni, taking "I Love You's" from the crowd, spinning stories, and charming everyone with her schoolgirl giggle and outgoing stage persona. The song selection is still packed with material from Blue, which sounds as raw and deep as it did when originally released. I am quite positive that the "friends" Joni has join her at the end are all of or 3/4 of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. She asks for David and Neil, which leads me to believe this is the case. They just sing the chorus together, so it's tough to pick specifically which voices are present. I've been unable to confirm this suspicion, so any feedback in support of or contrary to this opinion is greatly appreciated.
